Wind Dancer by Chris Platt is a middle grade novel
that will entertain and educate young readers. Set in the southwest, the story
is realistic and well written.
Thirteen-year-old Ali, and her best friend, Cara,
sneak into a neighbor’s barn one night to see how the skinny horses are doing.
The girls are appalled at their lack of care and the next day they contact
Animal Control anonymously. For a girl who lost interest in everything horses
after a bad riding accident that caused her horse’s death, Ali’s passion is
ignited once again – especially after the two rescues are placed at her home
for veterinarian guided care.
Meanwhile, her older brother, Danny, has had severe
problems adjusting to his new life after returning home from Afghanistan, minus
one leg. Ali tries to reconnect to him but Danny will need an outside influence
to open up to his family again and agree to get help for his PTSD.
